Eastern Prickly Pear

One of the few native cacti found in the midwest; low-growing with yellow flowers up to 4" across. Edible, pear-shaped fruit is red when ripe. Native Americans ate almost every part of the plant, including the fruit, pads and flowers. Most often found in dry sandy sites; should also do well in dry clay.
