The Westcountry™ 'Beefeater' Lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus) is a striking herbaceous perennial known for its intense, true-red flower spikes with subtle yellow flecks. Developed in England, it grows 24–36 inches tall, featuring strong, upright stems and densely packed, long-lasting blooms in late spring to early summer, ideal for borders and cutting. 

 

  • Color & Appearance: Saturated red flowers with yellow flecks, emerging from fuchsia buds.
  • Habit: Upright, compact habit with finely divided, green, palmate foliage.
  • Height/Spread: Grows roughly 24–36 inches high and 24 inches wide.
  • Hardiness: Typically hardy in Zones 4-7; acts as a perennial that returns each spring.
  • Key Attributes: Stronger stems than older varieties, less prone to lodging (falling over), and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.
  • Care: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It is deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Usage: Excellent as a "thriller" in containers or as a vertical accent in cottage-style gardens.
